Panayaa – Modern Indian Kitchen

The Ambiance

Panayaa has made its way into Pune after success in Bombay. Panayaa promises to offer vegetarian progressive Indian cuisine. The setup is classy, welcoming, elegant and chic. Headed by chef Ameya Mahajani, he attempts to astonish the senses of the diners with his meticulously conceptualised and created dishes.

We were invited for a tasting and here’s a brief of what we had.

Cottage Cheese Indiana

The Cottage Cheese Indiana had a typical tandoori marination and the cottage cheese cubes were nice ‘n thick. I loved the overall flavours and the slightly charred texture of the cottage cheese cubes.

Vada Pao v3.0

The Vada Pao v3.0 was a modern take on the humble vada pav with the potatoes being stuffed inside buns. We felt the stuffing could have been more.

Chana Masala Wonton Chat

The Corn Bhel Maze Cornetto and Chana Masala Wonton Chat had some out of the box presentation with some nice creamy, tangy fresh flavors.

Nazakat Kumbh

The Nazakat Kumbh were stuffed with onions, herbs and cheese and tasted pretty good.

Panayaa e Khaas is one Panayaa’s signature main course dishes with cottage cheese cubes stewed in a rich masala laced gravy. The cottage cheese cubes were soft and the gravy was thick and creamy. Pair it with a butter naan and you have a winner on your hands.

The Kheema Kasturi had vegetable kheema in a gravy finished with kasuri methi. This dish failed to impress me mainly because the flavour was a little off.

Papad Kofta Curry

The Papad Kofta Curry had cottage cheese and papad dumpling in rich makhani based gravy. The Dal Tadkewali was a standard fare.

Makhani Biryani

The Makhani Biryani was really nice and had some good flavours but a lot of the makhani gravy made the rice lose its pride.

Chocolate Landscape

The desserts we had were the Mohanthaal Cheesecake and the Chocolate Landscape. The Mohanthaal Cheesecake was decent with some well-balanced flavours. The Chocolate Landscape was made at our tables with the addition of some dry ice in the end to add the element of theatre. It was quite a mess and I wasn’t really impressed with this dessert.

Panayaa is taking on Indian cuisine and giving it a modern twist and I would definitely recommend for you all to try Panayaa with your families. A big shout out to Carina from Alpha events for inviting us and Team Panayaa for hosting us.
