Spice Kitchen, JW Marriott, Pune is hosting an Arabic Food Festival from 19th – 31st March. Headed by Executive Chef Mayur Tiwari and Speciality Chef Faouzi Aloui from Dubai, be ready to devour some Arabian delicacies in an Arabic setup with some Arabic music.
The Arabic section is available as part of the buffet dinner at Spice Kitchen and here’s a brief summary of what I had at the festival.
The Shish Taouk is a traditional marinated chicken shish kebab of the Middle Eastern cuisine. The common marinade is either tomato puree or yoghurt and lime juice. This might be a little bland for the Indian taste buds but the chef assured us that the cut of meat is the breast and it isn’t cooked on the tandoor on a high flame so it seemed reasonable.
We also had mutton based kebab similar to our Indian mutton seekh kebab. It had a subtle hint of spices and was cooked perfectly.
The Ko Fia Kebab were chicken wings in a sweetish sauce. The chicken was moist and succulent.
The Chicken Shawarma had a close resemblance to the one I had had on my recent trip to Dubai. Speciality Chef Faouzi Aloui from Dubai did justice to the shawarma and I was delighted with the flavors.
The Fattoush Salad was another one of the traditional healthy Arabic salads with vegetables, olive oil and feta cheese.
The Lubla Bi Zeit, Moutabel, Hummus and Muhammara were the available cold dips for the evening served with warm pita bread. My favourite was the Muhammara and its preparation closely resembled to the one I had had in Dubai. However, I felt that the hummus had excess lime juice.
The Jellab was a mocktail served that had grape juice, rosewater and a few dry fruits like walnuts and almonds. It was a nice sweet drink with hints of rose flavour.
I also tried the Falafel which seemed authentic to its core. It had a nice crisp and crunchy coating with a moist and flavourful chickpea filling inside. It’s a treat for anyone looking for vegetarian options and might suggest you to try the falafel wrap.
I felt I had transported to the Arabic lands of sands and sea. It was a great experience overall.
